The Protective Effects of Alpha-Lipoic Acid and Coenzyme Q10Combination on Ovarian Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury: An Experimental Study

Abstract: Objective. This study aims to evaluate whether alpha-lipoic acid and/or coenzyme Q10 can protect the prepubertal ovarian tissue from ischemia-reperfusion injury in an experimental rat model of ovarian torsion. Materials and Methods. Forty-two female preadolescent Wistar-Albino rats were divided into 6 equal groups randomly. The sham group had laparotomy without torsion; the other groups had torsion/detorsion procedure. After undergoing torsion, group 2 received saline, group 3 received olive oil, group 4 recei… Show more

“…To improve the efficacy of treatment with ALA, an increasing number of studies have focused on combinatorial therapies. As expected, a growing amount of evidence has suggested that co-administration of ALA with different interventions or drugs provides better protective effects on multi-organ I/RI, especially in the brain [23,24,[30][31][32]. Co-administration of ALA with other medications (vitamin E, apocynin, acetyl-l-carnitine, resveratrol, etc.)…”

“…Detorsion of the twisted tissue damages the ischemic ovaries and causes reperfusion damage. Therefore, the duration of the detorsion is considered to be increased with a conservative treatment option 23 . Such injuries are more dangerous in ischemic ovaries that do not receive antioxidant and anti-inflammatory treatment, which indicates the importance of conservative treatment 24 .…”

“…It is established that the disease is followed by ischemiareperfusion injuries due to an enhance of oxidative stress [2]. Different enzymes are responsible for this process, one of them being myeloperoxidase (MPO) from neutrophils.…”

“…One of the gynecological emergencies that may affect women at any age is the torsion of the ovary [1]. The condition is due to the rotation of the ovary or/and fallopian tube that impair the normal blood flow [2]. The prevalence of the ovarian torsion is from 2.7 to 3.0% [3] and the incidence is 4.9/100000 in young women under 20 [4].…”
