The psychometric properties of the hospital anxiety and depressions scale adapted for use with people with intellectual disabilities

Abstract: The HADS may need further adaptation; however, the measurement of anhedonia is a useful addition to the self-report measures of depression available for people with ID.

“…However, both the ComQol and HADs have been used extensively with people with intellectual disabilities. A recent paper (Dagnan et al. 2008) presented data on the psychometric properties of the HADs adapted for use with people with intellectual disability and suggested that, although the HADs is useful for measuring depression amongst people with intellectual disability, further exploration of its psychometric properties, particularly with respect to the anxiety scale, as well as validation of the scale against external observation and clinical diagnosis is called for.…”

“…In this study, the two sub‐scale version was used; this consists of a similarities sub‐test where the participant is asked to identify the similarity between the meaning of two words and a pattern matching task where the participant is asked to identify a pattern to fit into an increasingly complex pattern array. Although individual scores will have large standard error, the two subtest form allows the calculation of an IQ estimate that is highly correlated with the full scale IQ score obtained with full WAIS‐III ( r = 0.87). Adapted HADS (Dagnan et al. 2008): An adapted version of the hospital anxiety and depression scale was used in this study.…”

“…The HADS‐A has been used in adults with ID, but its reliability and validity have not been studied in this group yet (Dagnan et al . ). For better comprehension, we added a standardised explanation of difficult concepts, such as restless feelings, to four items (2, 3, 6 and 7).…”
