The Pursuit of Knowledge and the Problem of the Unconceived Alternatives

Abstract: In the process of scientific discovery, knowledge ampliation is pursued by means of nondeductive inferences. When ampliative reasoning is performed, probabilities cannot be assigned objectively. One of the reasons is that we face the problem of the unconceived alternatives: we are unable to explore the space of all the possible alternatives to a given hypothesis, because we do not know how this space is shaped. So, if we want to adequately account for the process of knowledge ampliation, we need to develop an … Show more

“…In order to do that, one needs to know in advance almost everything about the problem the machine will be asked to solve. On the contrary, when we humans try to extend our knowledge, we do not know in advance what we will have to face, what shape the space of possibilities may have (Sterpetti, Bertolaso 2018). So, it is quite difficult to program a machine to make discoveries in the same way it happens to us humans to make discoveries.…”

“…But proving that this is the case is not an easy task (see e.g. Sterpetti, Bertolaso 2018). From an ethical standpoint, consider, for instance, issues of responsibility on data management processes (which entail consistency of data organization and transmission with the original scientific question, contextualization of data, etc.)…”
