The Qualitative-Quantitative ‘Disparities’ in Social Science Research: What Does Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) Brings in to Bridge the Gap?

Abstract: There are explicit methodological tensions among researchers in the qualitative and quantitative tracks of social science research. In this paper, (1) we highlight the tensions by making a comparison of the two traditions in terms of their ontological and epistemological paradigms, strengths and weaknesses. Then, (2) we examine the possibility of mediating the methodological tensions through the use of Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) methodology. Our conclusions are that (1) both qualitative and quantit… Show more

“…We recognize that quantitative surveys have clear benefits, such as facilitating large sample sizes and clear response data that support statistical comparisons of explanatory factors and allow broad generalization (Choy 2014). They feature prominently in positivist studies that aim to establish causality, operationalize definitions of concepts and address hypotheses about social phenomena (Masue et al 2013). That said, their limitations must be acknowledged.…”

“…Qualitative research can generate rich data permitting different subjective views of a particular phenomenon that can complement and/or be compared to quantitative research findings. 7,8 Moreover, research that moves beyond discipline-specific boundaries is more likely to reflect the realities of high-performance sport, where teams of professionals are required to work together for shared performance gains. For example, while sport scientists are considered to be professionals in their own right, their ability to function within a broader performance team under the influence of a head coach is paramount.…”

“…Thus, this study, instead of an inductive approach, followed a deductive approach by framing clear and specific research questions and developing several hypotheses involving multiple variables. As the literature suggests, for such variable-centric deductive study focusing on statistical information rather than perceptions, the quantitative analytical approach is most appropriate (Masue et al, 2013;McCusker and Gunaydin, 2015). Accordingly, the authors followed the quantitative approach in the research design and methodology.…”
