This study was carried out on Rosetta branch water and 3 drains (El-Rahawy, El-Soble and El-Gezira) that discharging wastewater into it, to assess the Water Quality Index (WQI) of their waters. This investigation was performed during the period starting from winter 2017 to summer 2018. The mean annual averages of WQI values of Rosetta branch water were good to poor for irrigation (up to 55) and from poor to very poor for aquatic life (up to 97) at stations exposed to wastewater discharged from drains into water branch. The obtained values of physical and chemical variables of Rosetta branch and drains water were matched with the standard values set by FAO (1994) for irrigation, Canadian Water Quality Guidelines (2011) for aquatic life and WHO ( 2007) for drinking water. The obtained results indicated that the values of examined variables were higher than the recommended standards which affects the environmental live in this area and producing healthy problems. The concentrations of physical and chemical parameter were higher during winter than summer.

Egypt faces a rapidly increasing deterioration of its surface water owing to the discharges of contaminated effluents. The present study focuses on assessing the levels of toxic heavy metals and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water, sediments and Phragmites australis of freshwater and marine environments at Rosetta area. Fourteen sites were sampled including 4 sites within the marine environment and 10 sites distributed along the Rosetta River Nile. Potential sources of pollution were spatially assessed using remote sensing and geographic information system techniques. To quantify the environmental impact of metals on the aquatic system, metal index (MI) in freshwater, heavy metal pollution index, and ecological risk index (Er) in sediments as well as bioaccumulation factor (BAF) in P. australis were calculated. Remote sensing results showed that drainage canals (954.8 km), cultivations (1252.4 km 2) and urbanized zones (88.6 km 2) are the major sources of contamination in the studied area. Results of MI indicated that water of the Rosetta area was moderately affected by the metal pollution. Er values for metals in the investigated sites showed low potential ecological risk (< 40). High values of Er were observed in coastal marine water and the nearby estuary. OCPs in water and sediment samples were below the detection limits. Mean Ni and Co concentrations of metals in P. australis were higher than the critical limits of these ions. Results of BAF and regression analysis recommend using P. australis in remediation of metals from the aquatic system in such settings worldwide. The present study shows that using integrated remote sensing and chemical analyses could provide a regional and cost-effective assessment tool of environmental toxicity in fresh-saline water interface.

The paper explores port logistics of the Republic of Guinea with a focus on environmental protection. The aim of the article is to point out the risks resulting from the development of port infrastructure in parts where daily operations are in place. Two comparison methods were used on soil samples: X-ray diffraction and optical-electronic microscopy based on the harmfulness of each analyzed sample. The leaching tests were connected with thermodynamic modelling in order to determine the element speciation and the saturation indices of possibly precipitating solid phases. The results of thermodynamic models were supplemented by the determination of newly formed phases, using X-ray diffraction phase analysis. The PHREEQC-2 model was used for simulations of arsenic and other elements at the surface of hydrous ferric oxides. The leaching tests revealed that in organic complexes and in extremely basic solutions, high amounts of Pb and other toxic elements are released. It has been confirmed that a suitable alternative to determine the volume of sulphur over 50 mg/kg in geomaterials is the combustion method with infrared detection.
