The Quantitative Analysis of Zearalenone and Its Derivatives in Plasma of Patients with Breast and Cervical Cancer

Abstract: Zearalenone (6-[10-hydroxy-6-oxo-trans-1-undecenyl]-beta-resorcylic acid-p-lactone), a mycotoxin produced in corn, is able to adopt a conformation which sufficiently resembles 17beta-oestradiol to allow it to bind to the oestrogen receptor in target cells of the body and exert (agonist) oestrogenic action. We adopted an analytical approach to isolate and quantify the mycotoxin and its derivatives using high-performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In this study, the quantity … Show more

“…The concentrations of zearalenone and its metabolites, α-zearalenol and β-zearalenol, present in the plasma of patients with breast (n = 28) and cervical carcinoma (n = 54) were compared with levels in patients presenting with other diagnoses (n = 26) and healthy volunteers (n = 24). There were no significant differences between the groups (Pillay et al, 2002).…”

“…Only few data on EDC concentrations in body fluids exist ( Table 1). The maximal concentrations of 4,4 0 -DDT, a-zearalenol, BP-3, and 4-MBC in blood are similar or higher than the respective EC 02 values (red versus gray triangles, Fig 4C) [26][27][28]. Up to 4 lM of n-NP was detected in urine, thus exceeding its EC 02 [29].…”

“…due to the regular ingestion of zearalenone (Pillay et al 2002). A major stumbling block to this conclusion is to suggest that one toxin is a cause-all agent, which is clearly a naive over simplification.…”
