The Quantitative Measurements of Vascular Density and Flow Areas of Macula Using Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Normal Volunteers

Abstract: OCTA could be used as a noninvasive, repeatable, layer-free method in quantitative evaluation of VD and blood flow of macular area. The normal quantities of the vascular plexus density and flow will help in better understanding the pathophysiological basis of the vascular disease of retina. “…Shahlaee et al observed similar VDs to ours for the parafoveal region in the SCP and DCP (46% ± 2.2% and 52% ± 2.4%, respectively) and again values were significantly higher in the DCP (P < .001). 24 In the latter study, higher values in both retinal plexus could be due to the different layering of the superficial and deep capillary networks. 5 These authors reported mean VDs of 52.6% ± 3.2% and 57.9% ± 2.8% for the SCP and DCP, respectively, and values were always significantly higher for the DCP in all parafoveal subfields.…”

“…5,6,[20][21][22][23][24] In this study, a commercial SS-OCTA device equipped with new software was used to quantify VD in the macula. Such reference data can then be compared with measurements made in a variety of retinal diseases to detect different anomalies ideally in early disease stages.…”
