The reactivity of allyl and propargyl alcohols with solvated electrons: temperature and solvent effects

Abstract: . Can. J. Chem. 57,839 (1979).The rate constants kl for the reaction of solvated electrons with allyl alcohol in a number of hydroxylic solvents differ by up to two orders of magnitude and decrease in the order tertbutyl alcohol > 2-propanol > 1-propanol a ethanol > methanol a ethyleneglycol > water. In methanol and ethylene glycol the rate constants (7 x lo7 M-' s-' at 298 K) and activation energies (16 kJ/mol) are equal, in spite of a 32-fold difference in solvent viscosity (0.54 and 17.3 cP, respectively) a… Show more

“…The value of k2 is 4.7 times greater in 92 mol% 2-PrOH than in pure water, while (q92./,/rlHzo)-' = 0.46. This is in agreement with the previous reports of Afanassiev and Freeman (20,21). They proposed that for less efficient scavengers the reaction rate is determined by the e-, trap depth rather than the viscosity.…”

“…The parameters of the Arrhenius equation k, = A, exp (-E,/kT) are listed in Table 1. The table also contains values of k, at 298 K. The k, values in pure water and 2-PrOH are in satisfactory agreement with the data reported earlier (20,21,42,43).…”

“…Methanol and water are at opposite ends of the curve, which indicates that the reaction e; + NO;, in methanol has a different mechanism from that in water. The latter is a nearly diffusion-controlled reaction and the former is entropy-controlled (30). Throughout the series the variations of p, and E2 -EAo are similar.…”

“…It is interesting to compare the rate constant for reaction of the hydrated electron with 1-hexyn-3-01, C H q -C H O H -(CH2),-CH, (8.6 x lo8 dm3 mol-I s-') to that of the electron reactlon with acetylene, CH-H (2.0 x lo7 dm3 mol-' s-') (6), and with propargyl alcohol, C H q -C H 2 0 H , of 2.1 x lo8 dm3 mol-' s-' (10). Substitution of the acetylene group greatly affects the rate of reaction towards the hydrated electron.…”
