The Reactivity Patterns of Low-Coordinate Iron−Hydride Complexes

Abstract: Abstract:We report a survey of the reactivity of the first isolable iron-hydride complexes with a coordination number less than 5. The high-spin iron(II) complexes [( -diketiminate)Fe(µ-H)] 2 react rapidly with representative cyanide, isocyanide, alkyne, N 2, alkene, diazene, azide, CO2, carbodiimide, and Brønsted acid containing substrates. The reaction outcomes fall into three categories: (1) addition of Fe-H across a multiple bond of the substrate, (2) reductive elimination of H 2 to form iron(I) products, … Show more

“…[62] Although they did not comment extensively on this putative species, it is plausible that it is not a mononuclear but rather some polynuclear species, featuring bridging azides "[( [63] The likelihood of an azide ligand bridging two V ions seems possible given the large number of such M-μ 2 -N 3 -M compounds, although these are generally found for Groups 7 and higher (e.g., for M = Fe [49] ). They are very rare for Group 6 (e.g., for M = Cr [48] ) and hitherto not found for Groups 4 and 5 (based on a search of the CSD, version 5.34, November 2012).…”

“…Similar nacnac-supported complexes, featuring two bridging azide ligands, have been reported for [(nacnac)-M(μ 2 -1,3-N 3 )] 2 (M = Cr, Fe). [48,49] The average V-N nacnac 2 . [48] The V···V distance of about 5.50 Å is too far for any possible metal-metal interaction.…”

“…[11] Isocyanides are 1,1-amphoteric functional groups; their reactivity is defined by a-additions. This has been exploited most famously by multicomponent reactions, such as the Passerini and Ugi reactions, [12] but their utilities as ligands for metal complexes, [13] coupling partners in transition metal catalysis, [14] and polymerization [15] are also notable. Novel reagents containing the isocyanide functionality could be applied widely (Scheme 2).…”
