The Recognition of Heritage Qualities From Feature-Based Digital Procedures in the Analysis of Historical Urban Contexts

Abstract: Abstract. The documentation of historical architectural heritage in urban contexts involves the consideration of planning adaptations of settlements and landscape, related to the identification of formal and semantic qualities. In particular, the identification of cultural significance of Heritage building units can find correspondence in geometrical features that are documented within the urban asset. In this way, urban monitoring, in an increasingly automated way, can support the identification and character… Show more

“…The semantized models serve as visual support for a wealth of available information (historical, geographical, technological) related to each case study of the route. Organizing the elements of the cultural route through segmentation procedures of the 3D database (point cloud or mesh model) becomes a crucial structure for archiving and interpreting the data [43].…”

“…3D digital survey of urban environments can be performed applying different technologies and procedures, with different accuracies according to specific aims; beyond the different technologies that can be used, for the documentation of historical urban spaces -which have undergone transformations over time -it is essential to apply a critical approach that answers specific research questions and, above all, to adopt a replicable methodology capable of forming new skills that combine direct knowledge with the great potential that 3D documentation can offer. Cultural significance, interpretation and classification of spatial qualities in 3D survey datasets (De Marco and Pettineo, 2022) of historical urban areas are essential to support "memory" documentation for preservation, knowledge processes and enhancement and conservation strategies, in addition to perform monitoring of changes in urban features and spaces. The current emergency scenarios due to climate change and other events that put urban environments and cultural heritage at risk (Maietti, 2022) are also to be considered to make the best use of the digital survey technologies available today.…”
