The rectal mucosa-associated microflora in patients with ulcerative colitis

Abstract: Summary. The rectal mucosa-associated flora (MAF) of patients with ulcerative colitis has been studied in 25 patients with newly diagnosed disease, 20 with relapse of existing disease, and 44 who were in remission. Patients with active disease were re-examined twice during treatment. The MAF was simpler and less dense than the microflora of faeces. Obligate anaerobes usually predominated in the MAF although the ratio of obligate anaerobes to facultative species was lower than that found in faeces. Viable count… Show more

“…Several lines of evidence support the hypothesis that intestinal bacteria play a role in the pathogenesis of adult IBD and pediatric IBD (6,12,18,32,36,37,42). Increased numbers of mucosa-associated Escherichia coli isolates were observed in both CD and UC (17,25).…”

“…Another explanation could be the detection limit of these bacteria in the biopsy specimens. Since we are focusing on a subpopulation in a community which contains approximately 10 6 bacteria, a small difference in the number of organisms of a certain species might have a large impact on its detection. Remarkably, one amplicon with the highest sequence similarity (99%) to L. gasseri was found in descending colon biopsy samples of 9 of the 10 individuals.…”

“…Most of these analyses with contents from sudden-death victims (15) or with biopsy samples from living individuals involved a culturing approach and focused on the attachment of certain probiotic strains (1,2,12), the presence of sulfate reducers (5,27), and/or on bacterial population levels in diseased persons (6). Since biopsy samples are very small in size and therefore more easily exposed to oxygen during sampling, the number of viable strict anaerobes might be reduced easily.…”

“…Fecal levels of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria have been shown to be reduced in patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) (6,8,12) as well as in allergy (16), thus suggesting a role for these bacteria in the prevention of these diseases. For a number of gastrointestinal diseases, specific LAB strains have been used successfully.…”
