The Reduction of Oxygen on Pt ‐ TiO2 Coated Ti Electrodes in Alkaline Solution

Abstract: The electrochemical reduction of O2 was studied on TiO2 and normalPt‐TiO2 coated Ti electrodes using the rotating disk electrode technique. The normalPt‐TiO2 coatings were prepared by the thermal decomposition method in the Pt composition range 10–100 wt %. Tafel plots with two distinct slope regions were observed for the reduction of O2 on the normalPt‐TiO2 electrodes of high Pt content. The electrocatalytic activity toward oxygen reduction decreased remarkably for the electrodes containing less t… Show more

“…Titanium-based materials have been widely studied in literature as supports for noble metal catalysts such as Pt or Au and mainly in acid media [50][51][52]. Recently, there has been a growing interest of this type of catalysts for alkaline media [53,54], also in combination with carbon materials [55,56]. Up to our knowledge, Pd supported on Ta-doped titanium oxide has not been studied in alkaline electrolytes until now.…”

“…TiO 2 -coated Pt films on glass rods would appear ideal materials for electrode system construction. Pt or TiO 2 -coated Pt (Pt-TiO 2 ) electrodes can be prepared by various methods such as thermal decomposition, [9,28] electro-and electroless deposition, [9,[29][30][31][32] sol-gel process, [9,33] sputtering, [9,24] and CVD. [34,35] Although the metal-organic (MO)CVD procedure is attractive because it allows for the preparation of thin films with a fairly precise control of the structure and thickness, as well as enhancing conformal coverage of non-planar substrates, [36] it has rarely been employed for the preparation of metal or metal oxide layers for electrode use in dynamic electrochemical experiments.…”
