The Reduction of the Combined Effects of Aflatoxin and Ochratoxin A in Piglet Livers and Kidneys by Dietary Antioxidants

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the combined effects of aflatoxin B1 and ochratoxin A on protein expression and catalytic activities of CYP1A2, CYP2E1, CYP3A29 and GSTA1 and the preventive effect of dietary byproduct antioxidants administration against these mycotoxin damage. Three experimental groups (E1, E2, E3) and one control group (C) of piglets after weaning (TOPIGS-40 hybrid) were fed with experimental diets for 30 days. A basal diet containing normal compound feed for starter piglets was u… Show more

“…The detoxification of mycotoxin-contaminated grains can be accomplished using a variety of procedures, including physical removal, chemical conversion to less toxic products, enzymatic detoxification, and microbial degradation, among others [ 5 ]. A better approach to reducing the harmful effects of mycotoxins on animal health would be to include more natural active ingredients in the feed.…”

“…A better approach to reducing the harmful effects of mycotoxins on animal health would be to include more natural active ingredients in the feed. In the study of mycotoxin binders, substances derived from plants play a significant role [ 5 , 6 ]. Additionally, decontamination procedures must be integrated into animal diets in a simple, affordable, and safe manner Physical methods of removing or inactivating mycotoxins are less expensive and easier to use than chemical methods [ 7 ].…”

“…Specifically, the protein expressions of CYP2E1 and CYP3A29 were slightly up-regulated in the liver [45], whereas the enzymatic activities of CYP1A2, CYP2E1, and CYP3A29 were significantly decreased. However, when the piglets were fed with a mixture of grape seed and sea buckthorn meal, the negative effects were reduced and liver function returned to control levels [46].…”

“…To mitigate the negative impact of mycotoxins on pig nutrition, various strategies have been proposed, including the use of antioxidants [40,41]. One promising approach is inclusion in feed of by-products like, for example, sea buckthorn and grapeseed, which are rich in antioxidants [42][43][44][45][46].…”

“…Aflatoxin exposure, including sub-acute levels, are directly linked to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and are associated with other cancers, immunosuppression, and stunting in children [ 9 , 10 ]. In animals exposed to aflatoxin contaminated feeds, intestinal, kidney, and/or liver disorders, reduced productivity, and mortality can occur depending on aflatoxin concentration and age of the specimen, among other factors [ 11 , 12 , 13 ]. The toxins commonly accumulate in susceptible crops and unfortunately many people, particularly in developing countries, are exposed to the toxins beginning in utero and then throughout their life [ 10 ].…”
