The Regional Distribution and Relative Frequency of Gastrointestinal Endocrine Cells in SHK‐1 Hairless Mice: An Immunohistochemical Study

Abstract: The regional distributions and relative frequencies of some gastrointestinal endocrine cells in the eight portions (fundus, pylorus, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum, colon and rectum) of the gastrointestinal tract of SKH-1 hairless mice were investigated using immunohistochemical methods and seven types of specific antisera against somatostatin, serotonin, glucagon, cholecystokinin (CCK)-8, secretin, pancreatic polypeptide (PP) and gastrin. In this study, somatostatin-, serotonin-, glucagon-, CCK-8-, secretin… Show more

“…In addition, these IR cells were detected in the whole alimentary tract including the oesophagus of low vertebrates (Ku et al., 2000). Serotonin‐IR cells were detected in the whole GIT of the gerbil (Lee et al., 2000), common tree shrew (Yamada et al., 1999), Philippine carabao (Baltazar et al., 1998), the Manchurian chipmunk (Lee et al., 1998), rat (Inokuchi et al., 1982) and mouse (Sandstrom and El‐Salhy, 2000; Ku et al., 2002). In the present study, serotonin‐IR cells were detected throughout the whole GIT and showed the highest frequencies in the fundus.…”

“…In addition, the changes of regional distribution and relative frequency of some gastrointestinal endocrine cells in mice with ageing were also reported (Sandstrom et al., 1998, 1999; Sandstrom and El‐Salhy, 2000). Ku et al. (2002) reported strain‐dependent differences in the distribution and frequency of gastrointestinal endocrine cells in the hairless mouse compared with other mouse strains.…”
