The relation of feedback-seeking motives and emotion regulation strategies to front-line managers’ feedback source profiles: A person-centered approach

Abstract: Although the current literature offers some preliminary information about seeking feedback from various sources, a variable-centered approach has been adopted in which seeking feedback from supervisors and from subordinates was treated separately. We endeavored to extend this work through model-based cluster analysis, a person-centered approach, to identify distinct feedback source profiles in our sample of 209 front-line manager-supervisor dyads. Additionally, we aimed to explore whether such profiles differe… Show more

“…At the heart of the current theorising is how HR can build organisational climate for supervisory support, feedback delivery and FSB and strongly encourage subordinates to actively seek, instead of waiting for the feedback (Qian et al , 2017). Although feedback seekers’ personal characteristics and other contextual factors are argued as antecedents of FSB (Anseel et al , 2015), given the crucial role of a leader in individual followers’ lives (Chen et al , 2015), recent studies have been examining the role of leadership in employees’ feedback seeking (Qian et al , 2012, 2016a, 2016b; Anseel et al , 2015; Dahling et al , 2015). By making complementary but distinctive contributions to these streams of management literature, this research also provides the much-needed insights to further the ongoing debate on the antecedents of FSB.…”

“…Emotional regulation may also serve as an important antecedent. For example, it fosters job crafting and in turn earns higher level of weekly energy (Pekaar et al, 2018); or it predicts to seek more feedback from both supervisors and subordinates (Qian et al, 2016). Although this research is not directly relevant to the affect-proactivity link, it would inform the topic that such ability could also works as resources in being proactive, or help to better utilize the emotional resources to be proactive.…”
