“…In the literature, changes in the plasma chloride level and alterations in acidbase equilibrium have received most attention in this 'respect. Thus, Apperly & Crabtree [1931], as a result of experiments on nine healthy men, state that the total amount of hydrochloric acid secreted by the stomach is proportional to the amount of C02 dissolved in the plasma, whereas the concentration of the acid is determined by the plasma bicarbonate.
