Compared to the classical chemotherapy applications, PDT applications are based on a non-toxic compound that can be specifically activated by shining a certain wavelength of light. Constitituvely active chemotherapy drug agents lead to detrimental and unwanted side effects that halt the normal life standards of the cancer patients. Localized and controlled activation of the drug agents by PDT applications aims to overcome the side effects associated with the treatment. In our study we synthesized a unique set of phthalocyanine molecules that are water soluble to make them biocompatible. Moreover, these compounds anti-cancer activities were measured from multiple angles. Anti-cancer PDT activities of the derivatives were studied by testing their effects on the cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle progression. Moreover, these deriva-tives anti-metastatic, anti-angiogenic and immunomodulatory photodynamic activities were comprehensively studied by focusing on the intracellular signaling pathways that may play important roles in carcinogenesis, angiogenesis, metastasis and immune reactions. For the first time to our knowledge we are presenting data beyond the classical or canonical PDT applications in which generation of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) is explained as the main mechanism of the action for the PDT applications. Our results suggest that non-canonical PDT activity can be observed independent of the ROS generation efficiencies probably by affecting the intracellular signaling pathways. These novel set of phthalocyanine derivatives may find applications against colon, lung, breast and prostate cancer.

Effectors of Pregorexia and Emesis among Pregnant Women: A Pilot Study

During pregnancy, women tend to improve their lifestyle habits and refine their dietary intake. Quite often, however, these dietary improvements take an unhealthy turn, with orthorexia nervosa (ON) practices being apparent. The aim of the present pilot cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence of ON tendencies and the incidence of pica and record diet practices in a sample of pregnant women. A total of 157 pregnant women were recruited through private practice gynecologists during the first months of 2021. Nutrition-related practices were recorded, orthorexic tendencies were assessed using the translated and culturally adapted Greek version of the ORTO-15 questionnaire, pica practices were evaluated with a binary question and nausea and emesis during pregnancy (NVP) was evaluated using the translated modified Pregnancy—Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (mPUQE). Only two women reported pica tendencies, with ice and snow being the consumed items. The majority (61.1%) of women reported improving their diet since conception was achieved. Folic acid and iron oral nutrient supplements (ONS) were reportedly consumed by the majority of participants (87.9% and 72.6%, respectively) and 9.6% reported using herbal medicine products. The ORTO-15 score was reduced with tertiary education attainment, ART conception, being in the third trimester of pregnancy, consumption of folic acid and MV supplements and was only increased among women who were at their first pregnancy. The majority of participants experienced severe NVP and the remaining experienced moderate NVP. NVP was associated with lower hemoglobin levels, lack of supplementary iron intake, avoidance of gluten-containing foods, as well as with increased gestational weight gain. The results highlight the need to screen pregnant women for disturbed eating behaviors and nutrition-related problems, in order to ensure a healthy pregnancy outcome.

This article contains information from modern sources on the topic of early toxicosis, which most often occurs in the trimester, and in some cases can continue until the third trimester of pregnancy. On the occurrence of literature data, it can be said that diseases such as early toxicosis, the appearance of vomiting and nausea in pregnant women, the threat of diseases in pregnant women, neurological disorders, fetal asphyxia, rupture of the esophagus and retinal hemorrhage in the mother, as well as other complications. The pathogenesis of early toxicosis has many theories, for example, the theory of the influence of chorionic gonadotropin or the mechanical theory of the development of vomiting during pregnancy, but none of them can fully explain all cases of the disease. In this case, we can conclude that early toxicosis is multifactorial.Clinically, vomiting of pregnant women can occur in mild, moderate and severe severity, and in the latter case, the so-called vicious circle is often formed, which includes severe electrolyte disorders, neurological disorders, and alkalosis. Treatment of a mild form of vomiting of pregnant women is carried out on an outpatient basis, and moderate and severe – in a hospital. Conclusion. Based on the sources, the treatment of early toxicosis is based on an integrated approach. Undoubtedly, the basis for each degree will be diet, replenishment of water and electrolyte balance, as well as symptomatic treatment. Data are given on the use of both homeopathic remedies and drug therapy, as well as psychotherapeutic assistance to pregnant women.
