The Relational Context of Social Support: Relationship Satisfaction Moderates the Relations between Enacted Support and Distress

Abstract: In two studies of kidney transplant patients and their significant others, the authors examined whether the relations between enacted social support and patient distress were moderated by patients' satisfaction with their relationship with the support provider (i.e., their significant other). “…Furthermore symptoms of depression, anxiety, and fears about the recurrence of cancer can be subsumed under the same latent variable. The SEM analyses support previous research indicating that increased marital satisfaction is directly and indirectly (Frazier et al, 2003). “…The marital relationship is a broad predictor of social support (Hagedoorn et al, 2000), and it moderates the relationship between social support and distress (Frazier, Tix, & Barnett, 2003). There is some evidence that marital relationship is unaffected by mastectomy (Morris, Greer, & White, 1977), however there is also evidence to the contrary.…”

“…65 We used the xtmixed command in Stata, modelling surgery as a random effect, to account for nested structure of the data (patients nested within surgeries). Trial site location was modelled as a fixed effect rather than the top random-effects level to reduce model complexity and avoid non-convergence issues.…”

“…We hypothesise that relationship quality is not only a variable significantly related to relevant aspects of QoL but also a key factor in the perception of actual social support. Evidence from studies devoted to other conditions seems to support such a hypothesis, 18 and specific aspects of SCI make such an investigation worthwhile. Indeed, chronic disease conditions characterised by physical limitations can threaten couple relationships, as they can have a negative impact on intimacy and they can foster patterns of distancing or, at the opposite, symbiotic relationships rigidly characterised by the roles of patient and caregiver.…”
