“…Seneca et al (45–47) observed agar‐gel precipitation bands in the blood serum from patients with lower and upper urinary tract (pyelonephritis) infections. The correlation of the antibody with the homologous antigen (urine culture) was 61 per cent in lower‐tract infections, and 75 per cent in upper‐tract (pyelonephritis) infections.…”

“…They also found that the mucoprotein matrix of kidney stones (oxalate, struvite, cystine and uric acid) reacted with the blood serum from calculus and pyelonephritis cases, and with bacterial antigens. Bacterial antigens, i.e., endotoxins of Escherichia, Aerobacter and Klebsiella reacted with the mucoprotein matrix of kidney stones (46).…”

“…Pseudomonas aeruginosa is found in human pyelonephritis (Seneca, Lattimer & Peer, 1964; Ambrose & Hill, 1965) and experimental murine pyelonephritis can be produced in the laboratory (Gorrill, 1965;Gorrill, Klyhn & McNeil, 1966), hence experimental infection in mice would be not too far removed from the human disease pattern. Earlier work (Gorrill, 1952) had shown that strains derived from different sorts of lesions were efficient at producing mouse-kidney infection, so it would be possible to compare in this model a number of isolates made from a variety of hospital infections.…”
