/ourj *Lizzy Elkins is pursuing her BA at the University of Oregon, dual majoring in International Studies and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and minoring in Arabic. She currently works for University Internal and Executive Communications and spends the majority of her time writing for various publications, including her independent project, The Agenda and the University's Around the O. Elkins's research interests involve existential theory, Sartrian and Beauvoirian gender theory, postcolonial feminist theories and their praxis, and rap/pop/R&B and their relations to expressions of gender and systems of oppression. By illustrating and evaluating how these artists subvert traditional concepts of gender and sexuality, I hope to also shine a light on how their music, which reaches millions of people who are less aware of or accepting of gayness, catalyzes social change and is significant in this current political moment, which is an era of increasing public tolerance of queer ideas and less binary gender expression.
