The Relationship between CrossFit® Performance and Laboratory-Based Measurements of Fitness

Abstract: To date, research has examined the physiological determinants of performance in standardized CrossFit® (CF) workouts but not without the influence of CF familiarity. Therefore, the purpose of this present study was to examine the predictive value of aerobic fitness, body composition, and total body strength on performance of two standardized CF workouts in CF-naïve participants. Twenty-two recreationally trained individuals (males = 13, females = 9) underwent assessments of peak oxygen consumption (VO2 peak), … Show more

“…The intervention group showed improvements both in strength level (Squat test and Lunge test) and in aerobic level (shuttle run test). On the other side, physical fitness adaptations were already investigated, especially regarding aerobic fitness and body composition [ 25 , 48 ]. CrossFit, just as any other high-intensity training, increases VO 2max , strength, musculature, and endurance, and decreases lean body mass [ 19 , 49 ].…”

“…Recently, Crawford et al [ 10 ] showed that there were significant associations between predictor variables (VO 2max , 1RM, and power) and work capacity, and Landero-Gómez and Menacho-Juan [ 6 ] showed that strength, muscle mass, low adiposity, and aerobic capacity were important components that characterized CrossFit competitors. FRAN workout of the day (WOD) is one of the most famous type of training that every CrossFit athlete does to control their performance improvements [ 6 , 11 ]. According to Zeitz et al [ 11 ], 33% of the variance of performance in a modified FRAN can be explained by the total strength of CrossFit Total.…”

“…In the same article, only CrossFit ® experience was a significant predictor in a WOD with sumo deadlift high pull, a 0.5 m box jump, and a 40 m farmer’s walk with 40 kg following a three-round with 21, 15, and 9 repetitions per exercise structure. Recent research has also found that absolute VO 2 peak values and CrossFit ® Total (one repetition maximum tests for the back squat, deadlift, and overhead press) were predictors of the 19.1 CrossFit Open ® workout and the benchmark “Fran” performances, respectively [ 23 ]. Body composition was revealed as the most significant success predictor in the 2018 CrossFit Open ® [ 24 ].…”
