“…It has been known that a sense of community increases social interaction between neighbours (Farrell, Aubry, & Coulombe, 2004;Kim & Kaplan, 2004;Unger & Wandersman, 1985). In addition, a sense of community increases social ties and supportive acts between neighbours (Henry, Gorman-Smith, Schoeny, & Tolan, 2014;Rollwagen, 2016;Skjaeveland, Gärling, & Maeland, 1996). Thus, a greater sense of community and more interaction between neighbours may influence residents to build positive affect towards each other and to perceive their neighbours as friends.…”

“…This finding is grounded, in particular, by the high correlation Quite surprising finding was the lack of connection between the safety assessment of a space and its crowdedness (see Table 1). A number of literary sources (Jacobs and Lees, 2013;Newman, 1995;Reynald, 2015;Rollwagen, 2016) suggests that the presence of people in urban space is a factor contributing to perceiving it safer as being under mutual surveillance of inhabitants.…”

“…First, the perception of safety is higher among apartment dwellers than house dwellers. More specifically, Rollwagen (2016) finds that apartment dwellers are three times more likely to feel safer at home if they are alone, compared with those residing in single detached houses. Second, the unit cost of third party management is lower in a multi-family building than in a complex of single-family detached houses (Coulson & Fisher 2014).…”
