The relationship between lower extremity amputation and body mass index

Abstract: Objectives Non-traumatic lower extremity amputation (LEA) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Diabetes mellitus (DM) and peripheral vascular disease (PVD) are associated with increased risk for LEA. As such, DM and PVD account for 54% of all LEA’s, performed in the United States annually. As obesity is highly associated with both DM and PVD, our study sought to explore the relationship between LEA and obesity defined by BMI. Methods Using the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database, a retr… Show more

“…34 Patients with higher BMI may have better nutritional support and greater capacity to cope with the metabolic demands of chronic diseases, indicating a significant protective effect of high BMI on the risk of DFU. 35 The complications and comorbidities of diabetes may increase the incidence of LEA among patients with DFU. Hypertension, cardiovascular disease and renal disease, which were included in this study, all had substantial impacts on the incidence of LEA in DFU patients.…”

“…Still, others have reported BMI of 31.7 in people with dysvascular amputation, 17 and a study of 16,259 individuals with non-traumatic amputation found 30.4% to be non-obese, 18.2% obesity class 1 (BMI= 30–34.9), 17.3% obesity class 2 (BMI= 35–39.9), and finally 34.1% with obesity class 3 (BMI≥40). 57 …”
