The Relationship Between Nocturnal Polyuria and the Distribution of Body Fluid: Assessment by Bioelectric Impedance Analysis

Abstract: Overproduction of urine per fat-free mass leads to nocturnal polyuria. Extracellular fluid accumulates as edema in the legs during the day in patients with nocturnal polyuria. The volume of accumulated extracellular fluid correlates with nocturnal urine volume. We suggest that leg edema is the source of nocturnal urine volume and decreasing edema may cure nocturnal polyuria.

“…Resting energy expenditure was calculated using soft lean mass values based on Cunningham's equation [34]. The reliability of InBody has been previously reported in Japanese subjects [35][36][37][38]. The precision of the InBody720 Ò instrument was determined by measuring resistance two times a day in 10 of the study subjects.…”

“…6,7,[10][11][12][13] Other factors implicated in the pathogenesis of nocturia include polyuria and/or nocturnal polyuria which could be due to uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, vasopressin deficiency, fluid redistribution in supine position associated with edematous states such as congestive heart failure, low albumin, chronic kidney disease, as well as primary sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea and hypopnea. [14][15][16][17][18] In some cases, individuals may report the need to urinate as the reason for their waking up from sleep, even if they wake up for reasons unrelated to bladder pathology. 3 As previously suggested, 19 the cause of nocturia among older men is most probably multifactorial, and this could explain the previously reported associations between frequent nocturia episodes and higher disease burden.…”

“…The maximum dose of morphine was defined as that on day 57. Body composition of all patients was estimated by bioelectric impedance analysis using an InBody S20 body composition analyzer with InBody 3.0 software (BioSpace) on days 0 and 57 [8]. Nutritional intake was assessed by the Nutrition Support Team of Hokkaido University Hospital by measuring the weight of each dish before and after every meal.…”
