The relationship between teacher classroom behavior and student school anxiety levels

Abstract: University of A r i z mCurrent trends in anxiety research have centered on the development of scales designed to measure this phenomenon with reference to the specific situations in which it occurs. Of particular interest to the educator are attempts to measure anxiety connected with the school setting. In this regard, a recent study by Schelkun and Dunn (1967) found a substantial negative correlation (T = -.47) between student school anxiety (SSA) and achievement test scores. These investigators employed the … Show more

“…Of those that reported quantitative data, five of the six were cross‐sectional/observational in design and one was a cluster randomised controlled trial (RCT). With one notable exception (Zimmerman, 1970) all studies were conducted between 2007 and 2021. An overview of the characteristics of each study, together with a risk of bias rating, is provided in Table 1a (quantitative) and 1b (qualitative).…”

“…Poulou et al (2021) examined whether emotions expressed by teachers (both positive and negative) and their classroom management practices were associated with children's social–emotional and behavioural competence. Zimmerman (1970) considered the effects of teacher reinforcement (i.e., acceptance of feelings, praise and encouragement) on students' anxiety. Two of the remaining studies looked at the wider aspect of class climate.…”

“…The SAQ is a self-report measure of the frequency of anxiety experienced in school-related matters. The scale has satisfactory reliability (.87) and has been shown to be related to school achievement and the level of positive reinforcement received from the teacher (Dunn, 1968;Zimmerman, 1969). Twenty-two items from the failure and achievement anxiety subscales were adapted for this study to read in a classroom-specific manner using a 5-point scales with anchors of "frequently or a lot" and "never or none.…”

“…For example, lower anxiety levels have been found among students whose teachers used more positive reinforcement and more directiveness (Zimmerman, 1970) and exhibited communicative, supportive behaviours (Cameron, 1975). Also, anxiety was lower among students following individualised instruction than among those following traditional instructional methods (Lewis & Adank, 1975).…”
