The Relationship Between Teacher Job Stress and Burnout: A Moderated Mediation Model

Abstract: This study explored the relationship between teacher job stress and job burnout using a sample of 558 primary and secondary school teachers, who were administered with a teacher job stress scale, teacher job burnout scale, work–family conflict questionnaire, and general self-efficacy scale. The results showed that: (1) job stress had a significant predictive effect on work–family conflict and job burnout; (2) work–family conflict played a mediating role in the relationship between job stress and job burnout; (… Show more

“…Resource conservation theory holds that teachers confronted by work–family conflict will divert their resources into maintaining harmony and balance in their relationships with colleagues and family members ( LePine et al, 2004 ). However, if teachers’ time, energy, or psychological resources are depleted without replenishment, they can devote fewer resources to their work and may suffer job burn-out ( Zhao et al, 2022 ). Teachers take on important roles at home and at work that are important causes of burnout.…”

“…High job stress is a fundamental reason for burnout. The research about teachers' job burnout shows that work stress has a high predictive influence on burnout levels [27]. At the same time, other literature studies show that job stress is positively correlated with job burnout [28].…”

“…It is also important what individuals do when they perceive high levels of stress: poor recovery experiences in the form of low leisure relaxation and non-restorative sleep partially mediated the relationship between effortreward imbalance and lower occupational efficiency (Gluschkoff et al, 2016). In addition, Zhao et al (2022) found that work-family conflict plays a mediating role between job stress and burnout among primary and secondary teachers. Therefore, teachers may perceive, interpret and respond to different sources of stress differently (Collie and Mansfield, 2022).…”
