The relationship between the superior petrosal sinus and the porus trigeminus: an anatomical study

Abstract: T he SPS is a small, narrow venous channel located at the junction between the middle and posterior cranial fossae. It is adjacent to many important intracranial structures, and its vicinity to these structures makes it an important landmark for surgical approaches to the skull base. It originates in the CS and passes dorsolaterally to drain into the transverse-sigmoid junction. The sinus runs in the superior petrosal sulcus and begins from the posterolateral base of the petrous ridge and travels at an anterom… Show more

“…1A). It passed the pontocerebellar cistern and entered the middle cranial fossa through the porus trigeminus, thus corroborating with the existing literature [28]. The trigeminal ganglion was located near the posterolateral part of the cavernous sinus and lateral to the internal carotid artery and abducens nerve (Fig.…”

“…Erroneously, the petroclinoid fold has also been described as the posterior petroclinoid ligament. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The posterior petroclinoid fold, which normally contains the superior petrosal sinus, 7 is accompanied by the anterior petroclinoid fold, the continuation of the tentorial incisura onto the anterior clinoid process. and forms the lateral border of the oculomotor trigone.…”

“…[2231] As for the relationship between this sinus and the opening of Meckel's cave, also known as the “porus trigeminus,” Tubbs et al . [37] reported three types in which the sinus courses superior to, inferior to, or around the opening to Meckel's cave. The sinus was found to course inferior to or around the opening of Meckel's cave in over 30% of the specimens, an important anatomical variation that has to be considered before and during subtemporal transtentorial and retrosigmoid suprameatal approaches.…”
