The Relationship Between Work-Family Conflict and Job Satisfaction Among Hospital Nurses

Abstract: Those findings imply that nurse administrators and policy makers should establish different strategies to support the balance between the nurses' family life and nurses' work life such as child care and elder care services and other fringe benefits. Hospitals have to promote themselves as work environments that support job satisfaction to attract nurses, hence increasing patients' satisfaction and quality of nursing care.

“…This clearly shows that there is a serious shortage of nurses in the country which could further worsen with a continuous increase in population (Chen et al, ) but insufficient increase in the number of nurses as well as other health care professionals. Pakistani nurses, like nurses in other developing countries, are subjected to various workplace issues including workplace violence (Ali & Naylor, ; Jafree, ), long working hours (Kim & Motsei, ), inflexible work schedules (Yasir & Majid, ), work‐life balance issues (AlAzzam, AbuAlRub, & Nazzal, ; Yasir, Majid, Yasir, & Khan, ), unattractive remunerations (Atefi, Abdullah, & Wong, ) and heavy workload (MacPhee, Dahinten, & Havaei, ). Not to mention that they have to deal with anxious patients, worried relatives and stressed colleagues (Rehman & Ali, ; Watson, Rehman, & Ali, ).…”

“…Since the job satisfaction of nurses is correlated with their retention and performance, there is a need to quantify job satisfaction and its influencing factors among RNs. The association between work-family conflict and job satisfaction was well cited in nursing literature [7][8][9]. Reducing conflict between family and work roles can improve the quality and productivity of nursing, which will in turn improve job satisfaction [8,10].…”

“…Reducing conflict between family and work roles can improve the quality and productivity of nursing, which will in turn improve job satisfaction [8,10]. Both work-to-family and family-to-work role conflicts were found to be negatively correlated with job satisfaction, with work-to-family role conflict having a greater affect than family-to-work role conflict on job satisfaction among RNs in mainland China [7,9]. There was few studies to describe the relationship between role conflicts and job satisfaction among RNs pursuing for further nursing degree.…”
