The ball joint parts made of forged steel are quite important in the suspension system. The quality of production of ball joint parts is very important because of their role. Some basic defects can be found in the hole edge form. These defects affect the hole quality of ball joint parts. In this study, the effects of cryogenic processing on the wear of AISI D2 punches and the effects of punch wear on the hole edge geometry of hot forged AISI 1040 steel ball joint parts were investigated. The hole geometry changes are generally associated with punch wear and process parameters. For the purpose of investigation, piercing was carried out using an eccentric press with AISI D2 tool steel punches on 6.0 mm-thick ball joint pieces. The punches were traditionally heat treated. Some of the punches were cryogenic-treated at -145 °C in addition to the conventional heat treatment. Weight loss values were measured to assess the punch wear, and SEM and OM images were analysed. At the end of the industrial piercing process, it was found that the D2 tool steel punch wear decreased with cryogenic process applied and the size changes in the hole edge geometry of the punched 1040 hot forged steel parts turned out to be less marked.

The using of magnesium alloys for industrial sheet metal part production has become increasingly common in recent years. This research aims to characterize the effects of the cutting-edge shapes of the punches on the blanking forces and the sheared edge qualities in the blanking/piercing operations of magnesium alloy sheets. Magnesium sheets (AM60 and AZ61) were produced by casting and rolling processes. AM60 and AZ61 Mg alloys produced by casting were rolled by using two different speeds, 2.5 m/min and 7.5 m/min. Material thickness was adjusted to three mm in the rolling process. Blanking tests were carried out on a die-set and hydraulic press by varying shaped punches. In the experimental studies, flat-ended, concave shaped, and 16° angled punches were used. A loadcell was fixed to the experimental setup to determine the blanking forces. The results showed that the AM60 alloy was more resistant to shearing than the AZ61. The lowest blanking force was obtained by use of the 16° angled punch. It was determined that the using of flat-ended punches for blanking operations was more convenient according to the usage purpose of the parts while all three punches can be used for piercing operations.

Due to excessive shearing and load, punches wear faster than dies in press tools used for cutting operations. The shape and size of components produced by worn punches pose challenges; hence efforts are being taken by industries to extend the punch life and to reduce the cost and time of replacement of punches. The paper reports on an attempt made to investigate effects of cryogenic treatment and tempering cycles on wear life enhancement of D-3 tool steel specimens and punches. Four differently treated groups of D-3 piercing punches and pins were tested in the manufacture of AISI 1055 medium carbon steel chain parts and pinon-disk wear tests were carried out. The punch wear was assessed by capturing images of the punch tips using a machine vision system after manufacturing several chain components and the image processing technique was used in assessing the wear. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and optical microscopy (OM) images of the D-3 specimens were also taken to study effects of the cryogenic treatment. The results show improved wear resistance of the cryogenically treated punches compared to the conventionally heat-treated punches.
