“…Many studies indicate that TSH has TGA (Drexhage et al, 1980;Valente et al, 1983b;Roger and Dumont, 1984;Stringer et al, 1985;Dere and Rapoport, 1986 ;Jin et al, 1986;Ealey et al, 1987Tramontano et al, 1988Zakarija and Mckenzie, 1989), including [3H] Tdr incorporation in FRTL-5 cells as a convenient and reproducible index (Valente et al, 1983a;Jin et al, 1986;Tramontano et al, 1988;Zakarija and Mckenzie, 1989). In the present study, we showed that not only TSH but also hCG has TGA by measuring [3H] Tdr incorporation in FRTL-5 cells, which is consistent with other reports (Davies and Platzer, 1986;Hershman et al, 1988).…”

“…A rat thyroid cell line (FRTL) requires TSH and insulin in order to proliferate in a lowserum-hormone-supplemented medium [ 151, similarly to observations presented here. IN FRTLS, a cloned cell line derived from FRTL and adapted to grow in presence of 5% serum, dbcAMP does not reproduce the mitogenic effect of TSH [33] leading to the conclusion that TSH stimulates thyroid cell proliferation acting at least in part by CAMP-independent mechanisms. Obviously, such negative evidence needs to be confirmed with more potent and specific stimulations of the cyclic AMP system.…”

“…In vitro studies, however, failed to demonstrate the same results in cultured human thyrocytes (Dumont, 1971;Valente et al, 1983;Wadeleux and Winard, 1981;Westermark et al, 1979). The addition of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) also suppressed Fas-mediated apoptosis of thyrocytes, and both TSH and TSAb containing IgG increased cAMP level in thyrocytes Kawakami et al, 1997b), suggesting that TSH and TSAb act on thyrocytes in a similar manner to functional Fas expression on thyrocytes.…”
