The relationships between work characteristics and mental health: examining normal, reversed and reciprocal relationships in a 4-wave study

Abstract: This longitudinal study examined the causal relationships between job demands, job control and supervisor support on the one hand and mental health on the other. Whereas we assumed that work characteristics affect mental health, we also examined reversed causal relationships (mental health influences work characteristics). Further, the topic of the appropriate time lag for testing causal relationships was addressed. Our hypotheses were tested in a 4-wave study among a heterogeneous sample of 668 Dutch employee… Show more

“…In future research pleasure and arousal have to be conceived as respectively affective and cognitive concepts. Regarding dominance, many researches showed the importance of feelings of control related to behaviour (Seligman, 1975;Frijda, 1988;Gaillard, 2003) and health (Johnson & Hall, 1988;Furda et al, 1994;Warr, 1994;Gaillard, 2003;De Lange et al, 2003;De Lange et al, 2004). These aspects were also mentioned by Karasek and related to workload and stress in his model together with Theorell in 1990(in Gaillard, 2003.…”

“…Concerning perceptions, exhausted employees may find it hard to see the leader in positive light. According to de Lange et al (2004), the mechanisms of gloomy perception and rosy perception potentially explain the reversed relations between perceived work characteristics, including supervisor support, and health across time. Beyond employee perceptional issues, leader behaviour towards an exhausted follower may actually be reactive and diminish in positive characteristics, as discussed in one of the early studies on leadership and employee well-being (van Dierendonck et al, 2004).…”

“…Research on fatigue started with Angelo Mosso's pioneering work at the end of the 19th century 1) and gained momentum during and after both World Wars, when research focused on the development of performance standards and work and rest time schedules 2) . In recent years, many studies have examined fatigue (or its more extreme variant "exhaustion") in relation with, for example, high work pressure 3) , work-home interference 4) or lack of recovery 5) . The aim of the present study was to validate a singleitem measure of daily fatigue.…”
