The reliability of transabdominal cervical length measurement in a low-risk obstetric population: Comparison with transvaginal measurement

Abstract: The TA cervical length could be obtained in the majority of the low-risk pregnant women in the present study, and the TA cervical length was closely correlated with the TV cervical length. The use of TA ultrasound could be an effective initial tool for cervical length screening in low-risk pregnant women. TA cervical length <29 mm (5(th) percentile) could be used as a cut-off value for further TV ultrasound.

“…Furthermore, Roh, H.J et al found that TA cervical length measurements were correlated with TV measurements overall, hence TA could also be used as a cervical length screening tool (8,24). Recently, Peng et al (25) also made the same conclusion but directed more specifically to the cervical length screening in low-risk pregnant women.…”

“…27 However, the unpredictable effect of the volume of the bladder on the elongation of the cervix and the difficulty of its visualization due to obstruction by fetal parts can lead to unsatisfactory images in up to 25% of the cases. 27 Different from what has already been said about the transvaginal evaluation, this method still presents significant divergences in its standardization, 28,29 and it does not exclude the need for the complementary transvaginal exam, when the cervical shortening is identified. 28 The main objective of this study was to define reference range values of US measurements of the uterine cervix for low-risk pregnant women according to GA, from 12 to 36 weeks, and to associate these values with some obstetric, sociodemographic and lifestyle variables.…”
