The renoprotective effect of curcumin in cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity

Abstract: The polyphenol curcumin has several pharmacological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer features. In this study, we evaluated the effects of curcumin in cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: (1) control; (2) cisplatin (7 mg/kg body weight, intraperitoneal as a single dose); (3) curcumin (100 mg/kg via gavage, for 10 days); and (4) cisplatin and curcumin. The cisplatin-treated rats exhibited kidney injury manifested by increased s… Show more

“…Similar effects of curcumin on renal failure caused by cisplatin nephrotoxicity have been revealed in other studies. [17][18][19] In conclusion, the results of our study suggest that curcumin attenuates cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by preventing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Thus, we think that the results revealed in this study, for the first time, provides a basis for further research to discover the antiapoptotic effects of curcumin and contribute to the development of preventative treatment against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.…”

“…Our findings are well matched with previous reports demonstrating similar effects of curcumin on renal damage induced by oxidative stress. 4,14,18,19 Inflammatory mechanisms are closely related to the pathogenesis of cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity. In this study, we determined the increased renal MPO levels, a marker of inflammation, as a result of cisplatin exposure.…”

“…Curcumin improves kidney function in animal models of AKI by effects that include activating NRF-2 and HO-1 (108,169,299). Experiments conducted by our laboratory and others demonstrated the renoprotective effects of resveratrol and ethyl pyruvate in various animal models (36,37,46,157,174,183,243,264).…”
