The Representation of Women in National Parliaments: A Cross-national Comparison

Abstract: Women's representation in national parliaments is examined using a large cross-national sample. Initially, the article seems to confirm previous findings that the electoral formula and quotas are good predictors for the proportion of women in parliament. In line with some recent contributions, this article finds that the proportion of women in parliament is explicable in terms of culture-particularly attitudes towards women as political leaders. It appears that regional differences reflect differences in attit… Show more

“…Nonetheless, further research is needed to determine the specific mechanisms that could explain this relationship. In this respect, the literature on the substantive representation of women in decision-making bodies might be a good starting point (see Ruedin 2012). Moreover, the question of how social policy can be used to mitigate the effect of wealth and amplify the impact of education on IPV needs to be addressed in future research.…”

“…The cultural explanations cover various elements, such as religion, the degree of patriarchy in society, how entrenched gender role division is, the level of equality between genders, and the attitudes of women to politics (Norris and Inglehart, 2001;Ruedin, 2012). These explanations, which supposedly "blame" female under-representation on society and its backward values, do not form a separate block and can be integrated within the supply and demand explanations.…”

“…This rise has been shared by almost all the countries (IPU, 2014) and regions in the globe (Vengroff, Nyri and Fugiero 2003), but it is most notable in the West (Cheng and Tavits 2011;Beckwith 2007;Sanbonmatsu 2002;Studlar and Matland 1996). Yet a gender gap still exists (Ruedin 2012;Welch 2008;Vengroff, Nyiri and Fugiero 2003;Reynolds 1999;Matland 1998). The debate about this gap has spawned enormous scholarly interest, both in Spain (Díz and Lois 2012; Verge 2011Verge , 2006Ruiz 2006;Sánchez Herrera 2004;Valiente, Ramiro and Morales 2003;Álvarez 2000;Biglino 2000;Linz, Gangas and Jerez 2000;Sánchez Ferriz 2000;Trujillo 2000;Uriarte 1999;Jerez 1997;Jerez and Morata 1995;García de León 1994;Astelarra 1990) and elsewhere.…”
