Objective Many previously reported publications mentioned that oral lesion in COVID-19 patients was varied. The term oral manifestations refer to pathognomonic features that are found consistently with a specific cause and effect. In this context, the oral manifestation of COVID-19 was inconclusive. This systematic review aimed to analyse previously reported publications related to oral lesions in COVID-19 patients to define as oral manifestations or not. The PRISMA guidelines were implemented in this review. Methods All umbrella reviews, systematic reviews, systematic reviews and meta-analyses, comprehensive reviews, and original and non-original studies were included. Twenty-one of systematic review, 32 original studies and 68 non-original studies reported the oral lesion in COVID-19 patients. Results Most of the publications mentioned that ulcers, macular, pseudomembranes and crusts were frequent oral lesions. The reported oral lesions in COVID-19 patients did not show any pathognomonic features and might be unrelated directly to COVID-19 infections, however, more likely due to gender, age, underlying diseases, and medication. Conclusion The oral lesions found in previous studies do not have pathognomonic features and are inconsistent. Therefore, the reported oral lesion, in present time, cannot be defined as an oral manifestation.

Among the effects of COVID-19 are taste and smell disorders, which have occurred in a significant number of sick people. It is believed that the impairment of these senses may be long term. The aim of our research was to investigate the impact of COVID-19 disease on the ability to recognize tastes among students at the Rzeszów University of Technology. The research was conducted on a sample of students who declared that they had or had not suffered from COVID-19. The assessment of the ability to recognize flavors – that is, taste color blindness – was carried out based on the methodology recommended by the Polish Committee for Standardization [PN ISO3972]. The research, which involved 68 women and 74 men, was carried out in a laboratory adapted for this purpose, meeting the requirements specified in the standard [PN ISO 8589]. The tests took place in the morning (9 a.m.–12 p.m.). Taste recognition ability was assessed using a set of aqueous solutions of citric acid (0.43 g/L), sucrose (5.76 g/L), sodium chloride (1.19 g/L) and caffeine (0.195 g/L). The collected questionnaires were based on a standard approach to food quality analysis, and the data obtained were analyzed in the Statistica 13.3 program. It was observed that, in the studied group of students, the percentage of people who declared COVID-19 disease was high (69%). In this group, the majority of respondents (51%) described the course of the disease as mild. Among the respondents, 63.3% indicated a loss of taste, while slightly more (69.4%) declared a loss of smell. The analysis of data regarding the ability to correctly recognize individual tastes indicates that gender influenced the ability to recognize sweet and bitter tastes. Statistically, significantly more men misidentified these flavors. The impact of COVID-19 infection on the ability to identify the analyzed flavors was moderate and was confirmed only for salty and bitter tastes. Therefore, the ability to perceive important qualitative factors of food products was impaired.

Background Oral complications such as parageusia, xerostomia, and oral ulcers are frequently observed in patients with COVID-19. The aim of this study was to understand the oral complications and their influencing factors during the two waves of the COVID-19 pandemic in China between December 2022 and May 2023. Methods A total of 347 patients during the COVID-19 pandemic from December 2022 and January 2023 and 163 patients during the second COVID-19 pandemic were recruited through the Disease Prevention and Control Reporting System. Data on oral complications were collected via researcher-made questionnaires. Results During both pandemic periods, more than 50% of the subjects developed oral complications. Specifically, the incidence of parageusia, pathological tongue coating, and xerostomia all exceeded 20%, while the incidence of oral ulcers surpassed 7%. Patients with allotriosmia and xerostomia had a significantly higher likelihood of developing other oral complications. Hospitalized patients requiring supplemental oxygen had a significantly higher incidence of oral complications. Conclusions The results of our study underline that oral complications during the COVID-19 pandemic are prevalent, and their incidence has not decreased during the subsequent pandemic. In the context of the ongoing global spread of COVID-19, this study lays the foundation for physicians in recognizing and managing oral complications, which will improve the oral health of communities globally.
