The revised version of the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders (SCARED‐R): Treatment sensitivity in an early intervention trial for childhood anxiety disorders

Abstract: It can be concluded that the SCARED-R reliably taps treatment effects and thus should be regarded as a useful self-report index of childhood anxiety in clinical and research settings. Furthermore, the data support the notion that CBT should be generally regarded as an efficacious intervention for anxiety disordered children.

“…While earlier studies established the efficacy of individual therapy in treating child anxiety disorders, the results of a number of recent trials suggest that group treatment may be equally efficacious [38, 48]. In the present study, the mean effect sizes for group and individual therapy were comparable.…”

“…Most studies (77.8%) excluded children who were currently involved in psychosocial or psychopharmacological treatment. However, more recent studies [32,37,38,39] did include children who were on psychopharmacological medication, as long as they maintained a constant dosage on the same medication throughout the duration of the study.…”

“…[6,18,19] Several studies have compared individual CBT to group CBT [20,21,22] in children older than 8 years of age with both individual and group therapies appearing effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders although in one study [21] socially anxious children responded better to individual treatment rather than group treatment. It is important to note, however, that whether individual or group CBT is a better treatment modality is a relatively underresearched area and results to date are far from conclusive.…”

“…The concurrent validity was studied with the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (Muris et al, 1999c;2000b). The treatment sensitivity of the SCARED-R was established in anxious children (Muris, Merkelbach, Gadet, Moulsert & Tierney, 1999a;Muris, Merckelbach, Korver & Meesters, 2000a;Muris, Mayer, Bartelds, Tierney & Bogie, 2001). Finally, the discriminant validity of the SCARED-R was established in a clinical sample (Muris & Steerneman, 2001).…”
