The right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex may play a role in anxiety disorder and visual function

Abstract: Recent investigation suggests that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is involved in the interplay between cognition and emotion. The present study described three patients who underwent removal of brain tumors just above the right dorsal ACC. These patients had residual tumor following surgery and showed anxiety disorder (AD) both before and after surgery. Visual memory or attention was abnormal before surgery in these patients, but these deficits improved following surgery, possibly due to a decreas… Show more

“…Functional studies showed that the ACC processes amongst others emotion ( Kawamoto et al, 2012 , Killgore and Yurgelun-Todd, 2007 ), attention ( Nebel et al, 2005 ), and pain ( Büchel et al, 2002 , Lloyd et al, 2004 ). Changes in the ACC have been reported in cases of pain-induced depression ( Barthas et al, 2014 ) and anxiety disorder ( Shinoura et al, 2013 ). Patients with FSS experience alterations of attention, anticipation, and pain memories that correlate with increased activity of the ACC.…”

“…The cingulate cortex, as a part of the limbic cortex, has many functions, such as pain, 30 depression, 31 and anxiety disorder. 32 Yan et al 14 found that WM volumes were decreased in the right cingulate gyrus in patients with adult strabismus. In our study, we observed that the MD values were significantly increased in the brain regions of the left anterior cingulate in patients with comitant strabismus, which suggested abnormal microstructural changes in the left anterior cingulate.…”

“…It is connected with the prefrontal cortex, the parietal cortex, the motor system and the frontal eye fields, and modulates the frontal eye field, visual attention particularly during the tracking of visible targets [34]; it is also involved in the categorical recognition of visual objects [35]. Clinically, when the right dorsal ACC is invaded by a mass, such as a tumor, visual function deficits occur; once the tumor is removed, visual attention and visual memory improves [36]. The frontal lobe helps in the optic localization, coordinating multiple retinal fields and determining the fixation point.…”
