Conversely, while most sites exhibited preservation rates of 100% or close to it, the multi-period site at the ring sanctuary of Pömmelte [ 57 , 77 , 78 ] produced lipid extracts above 5 μg g -1 in only 57% of cases (16 out of 28 samples).…”

“…In the first half of the 4 th millennium BCE, a demographic shift was brought about by the Middle Neolithic Funnel Beaker cultures, represented in this study by the Baalberge Culture (BAC). Samples from 26 vessels were analysed, of which 11 correspond to the ditched enclosure of Belleben (BE) [ 55 ], while another 15 come from four graves inside a typical trapezoidal ditch at Queis (QU) [ 56 ] and different funerary contexts at Pömmelte (PO) [ 57 ]. At the beginning of the Late Neolithic (early 3 rd millennium), the arrival of populations from the eastern steppes configured the Corded Ware Culture (CWC).…”

“…Monumentality remains a rare feature in the central European Bell Beaker landscape, aside from a handful of examples. In this context the recent discovery of a monumental complex at Pömmelte is as stunning as it is exceptional (Spatzier & Bertemes 2018). Located in Saxony-Anhalt, this circular enclosure of c.100 m diameter combines several concentric ditches and posts circles.…”

“…The combination of palisades with rings of posts is also frequent. A good example is the so called "Ring Sanctuary" of Pömmelte (Spatzier and Bertemes, 2018), where they are also coupled with ring ditches. Although these buildings are larger, frequently enclosed by earthworks and usually have a wider free internal area than the one at Perdigões, this combination of concentric rows of palisades, post rings and ditches brings them close to this Portuguese case.…”
