The last two decades have seen a growing literature worldwide on do-ityourself (DiY) laboratories driving informal innovation. However, there is a limited account of the state-of-the-art DiY literature to the emergence of DiY laboratories or of the challenges, strategies for its diffusion and success. This study, therefore, aims to understand the state-of-the-art of DiY laboratories. Using the systematic literature review approach, 29 articles are analysed. The results revealed that the main purpose of publications on DiY laboratories was geared towards showcasing informal innovation. Most of the studies used the case study methodology and most were underpinned by theories from innovation literature. The success factors identified for DiY laboratories include personal motivation and the desire to create a business, whilst their emergence was driven by the need for extra income, experimenting with new ideas and the pursuit of hobbies outside formal work settings. Key challenges faced by DiY laboratories include economic and marketing factors, especially access to finance to scale up their innovations. The strategies used by DiY laboratories to diffuse their innovations are social networking, partnerships with bigger tech firms and selling off their innovations to investors. The study outlines the implications for practitioners, entrepreneurs, and government, and makes recommendations.

Existen diferentes enfoques que dan cuenta de la importancia de la relación entre el crecimiento económico y la implementación de programas de ciencia, tecnología e innovación (CTI) en el marco del diseño, la ejecución y la evaluación de políticas públicas. Por lo anterior, este trabajo aborda dicha relación desde el concepto, la metodología, la normativa y la implementación de la política de CTI de Colombia, resaltando el aporte del Servicio Nacional de Aprendizaje (SENA) a la construcción de programas de CTI en el país. Aquí se muestran las contribuciones de la estrategia SENNOVA, creada por el SENA, como respuesta institucional a la normatividad de ciencia y tecnología nacional y la organización en la inversión de recursos. Finalmente, se concluye que SENNOVA es un agente multiplicador de la apropiación tecnológica, social y colectiva, al transferir el conocimiento generado en los proyectos de diferentes líneas programáticas de CTI a los procesos de formación profesional y al sector productivo, contribuyendo así con la disminución de las brechas tecnológicas existentes en el país.

DiY science, as a field of research and practice, has grown rapidly over the past few decades. However, a significant portion of the DiY corpus focuses on technical issues in engineering and health disciplines, which limits our knowledge about the administration of DiY innovation and other related topics. To further advance the field, this special issue examines the management and implications of DiY laboratories for innovation and society. It contributes to a better understanding of the contextual and individual antecedents, operations, governance, business models, and strategies of DiY labs. The chosen papers, representing a mix of review, conceptual, and qualitative methodologies from across Africa, Asia, and Europe, provide different approaches and views that extend the current boundaries of extant knowledge regarding DiY labs and science. This special issue also highlights what remains to be pursued and outlines some interesting future research directions.
