The Rise of Total Ankle Arthroplasty Use: A Database Analysis Describing Case Volumes and Incidence Trends in the United States Between 2009 and 2019

Abstract: Background: Ankle arthrodesis has been the mainstay treatment for end-stage ankle arthritis. The popularity of total ankle arthroplasty (TAA) has been on the rise due to improved implant design and postoperative outcomes. The purpose of this study was to describe the basic epidemiology and trends of annual procedure volumes and incidence in the general American population as well as in different population subgroups from 2009 to 2019. We hypothesize that the incidence of TAA has significantly risen while the m… Show more

“…Our temporal analysis confirmed an increase in both inpatient and outpatient TAA from 2010 to 2019, with inpatient TAA increasing proportionately more. This was previously demonstrated in an IBM MarketScan database study by Karzon et al 15 The study examined trends in a total of 41 060 patients who underwent primary TAA from January 2009 to December 2019. 15 From 2010 to 2019, annual incidence of inpatient TAA was shown to increase by 92%, whereas outpatient TAA increased by 59%.…”

“…The development of implant designs has led to an increase in the number of total ankle arthroplasties (TAAs) being performed annually. 1 In the USA, the incidence rose by just over 1.2-fold between 2009 and 2019; 2,3 other reports indicate an annual increase of 10%. 4 Implant failures have therefore become increasingly common.…”

“…5 Similarly, the total volume of TAAs conducted overall, and the incidence per 100,000 individuals, has demonstrated a surge of at least 120% from 2009 to 2019. 10 This increase is significantly impacting healthcare expenses in the United States and drawing increased attention to heightened scrutiny regarding the appropriateness of surgeries and the need to optimize the selection of patients who are best suited for these procedures. 11 With growing interest in US health care around shifting from a volume-driven infrastructure to a value-based system (ie, one that is focused on outcomes benefiting patients relative to cost), there is a demand for improved measurement of this benefit.…”
