The Risk of Developing Lymphoma among Autoimmune Thyroid Disorder Patients: A Cross-Section Study

Abstract: Background. Graves’ disease (GD) and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT) are the most common types of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD), and both are characterized by the infiltration of lymphocytes into the thyroid gland. Moreover, autoimmune diseases like HT have a higher risk of developing lymphoma. This study is aimed at assessing the prevalence and association of lymphoma in patients with AITD. Methods. This cross-sectional study was conducted in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Data were gath… Show more

“…The second type is pyothorax-associated pleural lymphoma. The link between extranodal lymphomas and chronic inflammation is well documented, such as the connection between Helicobacter pylori infection and gastric lymphoma, as well as Hashimoto thyroiditis and primary thyroid lymphoma [5][6][7]. Similarly, this primary pleural lymphoma is linked to a history of chronic pyothorax or chronic pleural inflammation from tuberculosis [8].…”

“…PTL is a non-Hodgkin B-cell lymphoma that affects about 0.6% of patients of Hashimoto's thyroiditis [41]. The most prevalent histological types include diffuse large B-cell lymphoma followed by mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma [43].…”

“…Primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare but malignant thyroid disorder. The prevalence of PTL in thyroid malignancy is 2–5% and less than 2% in all extranodal lymphomas [ 1 ], yet in patients with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (HT), the prevalence of PTL is elevated [ 2 ]. The classification and corresponding treatment of PTL are generally paralleled with that of nodal lymphoma.…”
