Ultrasounds, characterized by high-frequency air vibrations exceeding 20 kHz, have traditionally found applications in medicine and the food industry, primarily for analyzing chemical composition and food product structure. They also have potential uses in agriculture, particularly in potato cultivation. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the potential to increase yields of selected potato varieties through the use of ultrasound in agricultural practices. The research findings were derived from a field experiment conducted on Luvisols between 2015 and 2017 in central-eastern Poland. The field experience was designed using a randomized complete-block split-plot layout with three replications. The primary factor included eight potato cultivars representing various maturity groups. The second-order factors included two cultivation management practices: (A) ultrasound application as a pre-plant treatment, and (B) a control group without ultrasound application (sonication). The study assessed potato tuber yield and its structural characteristics. Results: Tuber yield was influenced by the chosen cultivation practices, as well as the variations in responses among potato cultivars to environmental factors and pre-plant treatments. Conclusion: The research findings suggest that the use of ultrasounds in agricultural practices holds promise as a valuable tool for promoting sustainable agriculture, increasing potato cultivation productivity, and fostering environmentally friendly production methods.

Agricultural sustainability and agricultural resilience are two related concepts focus on maintaining the productivity and functionality of agricultural systems. Agricultural sustainability, a part of sustainable development, focuses on the long-term viability of agricultural practices, with conservation and efficient use of natural resources, the promotion of biodiversity and the enhancement of ecosystem services delivery to ensure the continued productivity of agricultural systems as central point of the concept. Agricultural sustainability seeks to balance the environmental goals with economic and social aspects of agricultural operations. Agricultural resilience is a narrower concept, focusing mostly on the ability of agricultural systems to withstand and recover from specific external disturbances (negative effects of climate change, market fluctuations). The interconnections between two concepts are currently under-explored. Agricultural resilience must be seen through the lens of a specific context or challenge to which it responds. Both concepts are essential for developing agricultural systems that can thrive in the face of evolving challenges and contribute to food security, environmental protection and economic stability. Agricultural sustainability provides a foundation for resilience, while improved agricultural resilience can contribute to long-term sustainability of agricultural systems. At the same time not all sustainable agricultural systems are resilient to specific shocks and stresses, and vice-versa. The aim of the study was to identify similarities and differences between the concepts of agricultural sustainability and resilience, with particular reference to their interaction.

Irrigation scheduling, coupled with the use of biofertilizers, constitutes an effective management strategy to overcome soil drought. This study aimed to assess the individual and combined effects of three selected biofertilizers—(R) Bacillus sp. and Bacillus subtilis, (M) native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, and (C) compost—on Triticum durum L. The agro-physiological and biochemical traits, along with the soil properties, were evaluated under two different water regimes, 100% crop evapotranspiration (ETc) for the well-watered regime and 30% ETc for the drought-stressed regime under field conditions, using a drip irrigation system. Drought stress (DS) led to significant reductions in the biomass, physiological parameters, and biochemical markers. Furthermore, the application of CM and MR significantly boosted the shoot and root dry weight by 137% and 72%, respectively, under DS compared to the control. Moreover, CM and R resulted in a notable increase of 167% and 130% in the grain and straw yield, respectively, under the same conditions. The normalized difference vegetation index showed improved values in the plants inoculated with MR and CMR, respectively, under DS conditions. Additionally, the soil quality was positively influenced by the application of M and/or R and/or C biofertilizers. These findings provide valuable insights into the intricate soil–plant interactions and the beneficial effects of combined biofertilizers in enhancing wheat’s resilience to drought stress.
