The Role of Abo Blood Groups in Blood Rheology of Cardiovascular Disorders

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present an evidence that ABO blood-groups play a key role in the rheology of blood in cardiovascular diseases, that they might influence the pathways of aetiology of these diseases, especially in relation to the microcirculation, tissue perfusion and thrombus formation, and that there exists a possibility that ABO blood-group specific drugs might be more effective in counteracting a development and progress of these diseases than drugs which do not take any account of inherent diffe… Show more

“…When the MFI of the AS‐5 RBCs were stratified by ABO group, no statistically significant differences were found among the ABO groups at any time‐point (Figs 3a–c). Although other seemingly disparate physiological processes are linked to the ABO group such as vWF antigen levels [40] and RBC aggregation in patients with cardiovascular disease [41], the current results might suggest that RBC susceptibility to shear stress‐induced haemolysis is independent of the ABO group; however, this finding needs to be confirmed in a larger study.…”

“…Blood group O expresses only the H antigen on its surface. 8 The studies of He et al, 9 Gill et al, 10 and Dintenfass,11 showed that there were variations in susceptibility between patients of different blood groups to cardiovascular disease and von Willebrand disease. Raval et al, 12 reported that the changes in mechanical fragility were insignificant.…”
