The Role of Abscisic Acid in Stress Tolerance

Abstract: Mosses have evolved complex mechanisms to overcome abiotic stresses. The phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA) plays an important role in the establishment of stress tolerance in vascular plants as well as in bryophytes. ABA pre‐treatment greatly enhances tolerance to dehydration, cold temperature and osmotic stresses in the mossPhyscomitrella patens. The response to abiotic stresses and ABA inP. patensis accompanied by the accumulation of sugars along with morphological and physiological changes. Some of the genes… Show more

“…Endogenous ABA accumulates in various plants, especially in osmotic and salt stress conditions (Sah et al, 2016). ABA improves tolerance, partly due to the accumulation of ions and compatible solutes (such as proline and sugar) in the vacuoles of the root, neutralizing the uptake of Na + and Cl - (Chen et al, 2001; Gurmani et al, 2011; Cho et al, 2018). Similarly, the increased production of ABA can ameliorate the negative effect of stress on photosynthesis.…”
