The Role of Acupuncture Improving Cognitive Deficits due to Alzheimer’s Disease or Vascular Diseases through Regulating Neuroplasticity

Abstract: Dementia affects millions of elderly worldwide causing remarkable costs to society, but effective treatment is still lacking. Acupuncture is one of the complementary therapies that has been applied to cognitive deficits such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and vascular cognitive impairment (VCI), while the underlying mechanisms of its therapeutic efficiency remain elusive. Neuroplasticity is defined as the ability of the nervous system to adapt to internal and external environmental changes, which may support some… Show more

“…Acupuncture may also improve LTP deficiencies and boost cerebral blood flow to lessen dementia symptoms, according to animal studies ( 57 ). A previous systematic review found that MA improved MoCA and MMSE scores in elderly patients with MCI, indicating that MA may have some therapeutic benefits for senior patients with MCI ( 58 ). Additionally, a clinical investigation using MA to treat MCI demonstrated that manual acupuncture was beneficial in enhancing memory and cognitive function in MCI patients ( 59 ).…”

“…However, a limited number of targeted drugs effectively improved cognitive function in CSVDCI patients (Pantoni, 2010), with minimal efficacy for dementia (Bath and Wardlaw, 2015). Interestingly, acupuncture has been widely used in China as a complementary alternative treatment for dementia, and also been accepted for VCI treatment in Western medicine (Ji et al, 2021). The main advantage of acupuncture is the lower incidence of adverse effects that characterize pharmaceutical approaches (NIH Consensus Conference, 1998;Kim et al, 2019).…”
