“…Leaf and needle samples were dried and milled (Roivainen et al 2011a). The present study exploited the widely used assumption that the behaviour of stable and radioactive isotopes of the same element is similar if long-term contamination is considered (Varga et al 2009;IAEA 2010;Sheppard et al 2010). Thus, only total element concentrations in all soil (n = 52) and leaf/needle samples (n = 139) collected were analysed after HNO 3 digestion in a microwave oven (procedure following US-EPA standard 3051) by means of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) (Perkin-Elmer Sciex Elan 6000) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) (Thermo Jarrel Ash Iris Advantage).…”

“…This result suggests that the study of solid reactivity for a fresh Se contamination is a specific topic, different from the study of native Se. As recalled by Varga et al (2009), the behaviour of naturally occurring isotopes (stable or radioactive) in the environment is often used to provide an analogue for the behaviour of the same or other isotopes released as pollutant in the environment. Our results show this approach must be used with caution and may be valid for the study of long term contamination only.…”

“…Using elements from the same group or, as in the case of lanthanides and actinides, series would also appear to have some potential in providing suitable analogue parameters for transfer (Varga et al, 2009). At a simple level of understanding, elements from the same group exhibit the same oxidation state, bind in the same way to ligands within natural systems and therefore might be expected to express similar mobility and bioavailability under the same environmental conditions.…”

“…Of course, this initial simplistic consideration is complicated by the fact that many elements express two or more valence states and are often more strongly and differentially influenced by the chemistry of the surrounding media than by general laws related to their oxidation state or binding characteristics. Moreover, despite their chemical similarity, elements from the same group or series may have different biological function (Varga et al, 2009). Sheppard and Evenden (1990) in their analysis of one species of plant concluded that CR values for various elements generally reflected the periodic classification of the elements and that interpolation using periodic classification might therefore be considered justifiable.…”
