The role of ASM on the formation and properties of cirrus clouds over the Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: Cirrus clouds play a significant role in the Earth's energy balance and in the hydrological cycle of the atmosphere. Here, a high-performance Micro Pulse Lidar was continuously used to investigate cirrus cloud formation and characteristics at Ali (32.50 N, 80.08 E; 4279 m), in the western Tibetan Plateau from 25 July to 23 September 2016, a time frame that spanned the prevalence and degeneration period of the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). The cirrus clouds frequently occurred with sharp fluctuations in the verti… Show more

“…The single–layer clouds in the eastern part of the plateau are mostly concentrated in 5–8 km AGL (above ground level), while for the two–layer cloud structure, the bottom layer is likely to be concentrated in 2–3 km AGL, and the top layer is most likely to be between 11 and 15 km AGL in summer (Wan et al., 2022). The formation of high cloud over the TP is related to the remnants of overflow from deep convective anvils (He et al., 2019; Jin, 2006; Zhang et al., 2020), the condensation of the warm and moist air lifted by large terrain (Chen & Liu, 2005; Zhang et al., 2020) and the high–level advection (Sun et al., 2019). Low clouds occur more frequently over the TP than eastern China because the near–surface air over the TP is lighter and colder than that in eastern China, facilitating the ascent and condensation processes forming the cloud (Wang et al., 2020).…”
