The role of biologic in foot and ankle trauma—a review of the literature

Abstract: The most recent studies have shown benefits for biologic use in patients predisposed to poor bone and soft tissue healing. Biologics have shown benefit in treating soft tissue injuries such as Achilles ruptures as well as the complications of trauma such as non-unions and osteoarthritis. Biologics have shown some benefit in improving functional and pain scores, as well as reducing time to heal in foot and ankle traumatic injuries, with particular success shown with patients that have risk factors for poor heal… Show more

“…Newer techniques have surfaced to further reduce the likelihood of delayed union or nonunion. Biologics such as BMAC, which is rich in mesenchymal cells, have shown good results with the management of nonunion [15][16][17] ; its use has been proposed in the setting of primary fixations where delayed union or nonunion is highly expected. 17 In our series, BMAC was applied to the fracture site in 2 patients at the time of primary surgery.…”

As none of our patients had delayed or nonunion, it remains to be seen if BMAC was contributory to the success of fracture healing.…”

“…However, most of these methods lack evidence regarding their therapeutic efficacy. [6][7][8][9][10][11] Human placenta hydrolysate (hPH) such as Laennec is used to improve liver function in patients with chronic liver disease, 12) however, it is being used in a variety of ways in clinical practice, from wound healing to immunoregulation. According to recent studies, [13][14][15][16] Laennec is rich in bioactive substances, such as peptides and amino acids.…”
