The Role of Blue/Green Laser Systems in Strategic Submarine Communications

Abstract: Absrmct-A continuing interest exists in the Department of Defense to stress technology wherever it may result in the improvement of a military system. One important area where this is currently occurring is in laser communications. Specifically, an extensive effort is underway to exploit the "BIue/Green" transmission window in the ocean and develop a strategic laser communication system operating between an orbiting satellite and a submerged submarine. In this paper we discuss some of the operational motivatio… Show more

“…Whether in theory or practical application, it is very important to study and develop blue-green laser communication techniques. There has been a lot of research of such laser communications, mainly for underwater submarine application [3][4] . Blue-green laser communication is a potential means to solve communication problem of underwater submarine.…”

“…One of the recent applications of Bessel-Gauss beams concerns the generation of the second harmonic of near-infrared light through the nonlinear optical processes. The importance of the green light emerges from the wide applications in spectroscopy [10], ophthalmology [11], pumping source of solid-state lasers [12], ocean exploration [13], laser probes [13], and underwater communication [13,14].…”

“…Whether in theory or practical application, it is very important to study and develop blue-green laser communication techniques. There has been a lot of research of such laser communications, mainly for underwater submarine application [3][4][5]. In the circumstances, we develop a simple experimental blue-green laser communication system employing optical pulse position modulation (PPM).…”
