The Role of Calcareous Soils in SCC of X52 Pipeline Steel

Abstract: Susceptibility to external stress corrosion cracking (ESCC) of API X52 pipeline steel in calcareous soil containing different moisture content has been investigated using slow strain rate tests (SSRT). This type of soil is common of the state of Campeche Mexico and has a pH around 8. The results indicate that X52 pipeline steel was susceptible to external SCC only in the saturated calcareous soil, showing some micro cracks in the gage section of the SSR specimen. It was observed that some micro cracks were fou… Show more

“…This technique provides useful information on SCC susceptibility of the actual pipeline steels exposed to external and internal solutions, in addition to a relatively short experimental time to evaluate SCC susceptibility of metal materials [ 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ]. There are several mobile constant extension rate machines used in the SSRT to determine SCC susceptibility of metals exposed to corrosive environments [ 59 , 60 ].…”

“…SCC testing is related to pit-crack transition processes including microvoids and other types of discontinuities, as is shown in Figure 3 [ 59 ]. Thus, unpredictable pits-cracks initiation and propagation including the plastic deformation, tensile residual stresses (stress intensity parameter), and corrosion fatigue and the stage of SCC models are taken into consideration [ 59 , 173 , 174 , 175 , 176 , 177 , 178 , 179 , 180 , 181 , 182 ].…”

“…Only few microcracks were observed in the gage section of X52 samples tested in NS4 solution with pH5. Sometimes the cracks initiate from pitting, the conditions of stress and geometry of the pits, permit to evolved cracks from the bottom of the pits 30 .…”
